As a seasoned crypto investor with a keen interest in both traditional and digital collectibles, I find this news from Indonesia particularly intriguing. Having witnessed the rise of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) in various sectors, it’s fascinating to see them being applied to philately – a hobby that has been around for centuries.
Indonesia’s National Postal Service introduced the nation’s inaugural Non-Fungible Token (NFT) postage stamp featuring the stunning bird of paradise species, known as Cenderawasih.
On September 27th, Pos Indonesia (Indonesia’s National Post Office) debuted the nation’s inaugural NFT postage stamp as a tribute to the 79th anniversary of the Indonesian Post, which took place in Bandung, Indonesia. This collaborative project was executed alongside the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information.
For the first time, Indonesia is issuing a stamp that incorporates blockchain tech for global philately fans to digitally collect it.
The stamp is valued at approximately $9.90 and features the image of the Cenderawasih bird, also known as the bird of paradise. The species is known for having large multi-colored feathers and are a native to the Papua island of Indonesia.
As per the Indonesia Post’s official announcement, the NFT stamps will only be made available in a restricted number and will take the form of a collector’s booklet.
Faizal Rochmad Djoemadi, head of Pos Indonesia, clarified that their new NFT (Non-Fungible Token) stamps are intended as collectibles rather than for mailing purposes like traditional stamps. His goal is to ignite the curiosity of younger generations towards stamp collecting by introducing this innovative concept.
Faizal told reporters during the launch event that it’s likely young people, who are fluent in digital technology, might rediscover the hobby of stamp collecting, but instead of physical stamps, they could collect NFTs,” (Non-fungible tokens)
As a researcher, I mentioned that the digital stamp will also be made available in a tangible format for collectors’ convenience. They can acquire this physical version alongside the NFT. The Indonesian Post’s website offers an opportunity to purchase the stamp using a QR code scan, which redirects potential buyers to a Google form link where they can place their order for the NFT stamp.
Launching this new product places Indonesia among the third nation in Southeast Asia to introduce NFT stamps. Adjacent nations such as Thailand and Malaysia have previously unveiled their digital postage stamps as NFTs.
