Iowa Attorney General Warns Iowans of Romance Crypto Scam

As a researcher who has dedicated years of my career to uncovering the intricacies of online fraud and scams, I cannot help but feel a sense of profound sadness when I hear stories like this one from Iowa. The cruelty and sophistication of these schemes are truly staggering.

As a concerned crypto investor, I’m heeding the warning from Iowa Attorney General Bird about the surge in romance scams. These deceitful schemes are leaving fellow residents heartbroken and financially drained.

In a recent case, an Iowa woman was tricked into sending over $10,000 to a scammer she believed was a trusted friend, only to discover she had been cruelly deceived.

The fraud started after the woman developed a connection with the con artist on Facebook. As they spent more time together, they discovered mutual passions such as music and art, leading her to believe they had formed a real friendship based on shared interests.

As their bond grew stronger, the con artist invented a tale about requiring funds for acquiring a certificate from Turkey, claimed to be essential for his U.S. return. Despite her eagerness to assist, the woman exhausted her credit card limit and transferred over $10,000 via a Bitcoin ATM, believing that her companion was truly in need.

Despite constant assurances that he would come back home imminently, the swindler consistently prolonged his return, asking for more money and exploiting the woman’s kindness. It wasn’t until the Iowa Attorney General’s Office contacted her that she understood she had fallen victim to a scam, with slim prospects of getting back her stolen funds.

Attorney General Bird advises Iowans to stay alert and exercise caution, particularly when interacting with individuals they encounter on the internet.

Deceitful swindlers, often referred to as scammers, exploit the kindness of others for their own gain. They’re relentless in their pursuit of your possessions until they exhaust their target.

Bird cautions against transferring funds to anyone over the internet, disclosing private details, or replying to uninvited communications or phone calls.
