As an experienced art analyst with a keen eye for the unusual, I find Justin Sun’s purchase of Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian” both intriguing and thought-provoking. The banana duct-taped to a wall might seem like a simple piece, but its impact on contemporary art, meme culture, and the cryptocurrency community is undeniable.
Tron founder Justin Sun bought the famed banana duct-taped to the wall sculpture for $6.2 million at Sotheby’s after six minutes of bidding. He says he will ‘personally eat the banana.’
On the 21st of November, Justin Sun shared details about his latest acquisition from Sotheby’s – Maurizio Cattelan’s artwork titled “Comedian”, essentially a single banana adhered to a wall with a piece of duct tape.
In this post, Sun stated that the piece isn’t merely an artwork – it embodies a significant cultural movement that links the realms of art, internet humor (memes), and the digital currency community.
In a recent disclosure, the inventor of TRON (TRX) shared his intention to consume a banana as part of an extraordinary artistic endeavor, paying tribute to its significance in both art history and mainstream culture.
After buying the sculpture, Sun obtained an authenticity certificate which allows him to display the artwork officially, as stated in Bloomberg’s report. Moreover, Sotheby’s provided Sun with a beginner’s kit for the sculpture that included a banana, some duct tape, and instructions on how best to present the piece.
I’m ecstatic to reveal that I’ve become the proud owner of the banana 🍌! Shout-out to @SpaceX and @Sothebys. Hey everyone, this is Justin Sun, and I’m delighted to spread the news that I’ve managed to secure Maurizio Cattelan’s famous piece, Comedian, for a cool $6.2 million. It’s not just any artwork; it embodies a significant cultural movement!

The sun anticipates that this work could stimulate additional conversation, eventually earning a place in history, as it ignites creativity and leaves an impression on art lovers worldwide.
In 2019, the sculpture made its initial appearance at Art Basel Miami Beach. It was exhibited within the Galerie Perrotin’s booth.
Even though it was quite straightforward, the artwork managed to attract a huge number of spectators. In no time at all, Cattelan’s banana morphed into an internationally recognized internet sensation, known as a meme. It graced the cover of the New York Post with the title “Bananas!”, and has since been reproduced in numerous forms of merchandise.
Previously, instances of people consuming the well-known banana have occurred, just like last April when a South Korean student allegedly ate a banana stuck to the wall at Seoul’s Leeum Museum of Art. The banana was subsequently replaced, and no legal action was taken against the student by the museum.
In the year 2019, a banana was first consumed as art. This happened at the Galerie Perrotin in New York City, where performance artist David Datuna removed the banana from the wall and ate it while it was on display.
