Microsoft to reduce reliance on OpenAI by using in-house AI Models

As a seasoned researcher with a keen interest in the tech industry, particularly AI and its applications, I find Microsoft’s strategic move to reduce dependency on OpenAI for its 365 Copilot intriguing. With my years of experience in observing market trends and corporate strategies, it seems that Microsoft is taking a proactive step towards self-reliance, aiming to enhance performance and cut operational costs.

Microsoft intends to lessen its reliance on OpenAI, boost performance, and cut expenses by incorporating both internal and external AI models into its latest feature, Microsoft 365 Copilot. At present, Microsoft has an agreement with OpenAI for the training of its AI models, and during the launch of the 365 copilot in March 2023, they acknowledged OpenAI’s role in its early achievements.

As per a report from Reuters, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, is closely monitoring the progress of their strategic goals. Now, Microsoft is training their internal language models, such as Phi-4, and customizing open-source models to enhance the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of their AI assistant. Additionally, other business divisions within Microsoft are exploring various AI resources for diversification.

Back in October, GitHub – which was purchased by Microsoft in 2018 – started incorporating models from Anthropic and Google. This step serves to supplement the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4. Meanwhile, the chatbot designed for consumers, Copilot, now relies on a blend of our own technology and solutions provided by OpenAI.

Based on various reports, Microsoft’s latest feature, Microsoft 365 Copilot, has been subject to criticism due to its pricing and usefulness. Interestingly, a survey conducted by Gartner indicates that many IT companies continue to use this tool despite the controversy. Launched in March 2023, Microsoft 365 Copilot quickly garnered attention for integrating the advanced OpenAI GPT-4 model, which boosts its capabilities in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint directly.
