As a seasoned analyst with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but shake my head at the audacity and persistence of these cybercriminals. The recent hacking of OpenAI’s official press account is just another reminder of how relentless these scammers are in their pursuit of unsuspecting victims.
On Monday, a hack occurred on the official press platform of OpenAI (previously known as X), resulting in the dissemination of untrue statements regarding a fictitious cryptocurrency called “$OPENAI.” The hackers promoted a counterfeit OpenAI token, encouraging users to obtain a share by linking their digital wallets to a fraudulent website designed for phishing purposes.
As reported by Bloomberg, a post containing mistakes such as referring to it as “$OPEANAI” rather than “$OPENAI,” offered early access to future OpenAI beta projects for individuals possessing the token. However, there is no company called $OPENAI, and the fraudulent website employed a misleading web address, “token-openai.com,” to deceive users into disclosing their digital wallet details.
Although it was clearly a fraudulent scheme, the original post and subsequent interactions persisted, with commenting options disabled to camouflage the trickery. At the time of this writing, OpenAI has yet to provide a response regarding these matters.
Previously, there have been instances where accounts linked to OpenAI have been breached. Specifically, in June 2023, the account of OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati (X account), was hacked and used to propagate a false token scheme. In recent times, other employees at OpenAI have also experienced similar attacks.
As a diligent analyst, I can’t help but sound the alarm: The surge of cryptocurrency-related scams is becoming increasingly evident. In the year 2023 alone, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that an astounding $5.6 billion was lost by Americans to these deceitful schemes. Regrettably, this figure is projected to escalate even further in the coming year, 2024.
Should you come across any questionable or potentially harmful links, it’s best to steer clear of them and promptly inform the authorities about them to keep yourself safe from such fraudulent activities.
