Researchers Help Recover $3 Million in Lost Bitcoin

As a researcher with a background in digital forensics and cryptocurrency recovery, I’ve seen my fair share of heartbreaking stories about lost or stolen cryptocurrencies. But the case of Michael and his $3 million in Bitcoin was truly unique.

As a researcher specializing in Bitcoin recovery, I had the privilege of collaborating with my colleague Joe Grand, a renowned hardware hacker, to aid a man named Michael in retrieving nearly $3 million worth of Bitcoins. We managed this feat by regaining access to his Trezor wallet’s password.

In 2013, I utilized RoboForm password manager to generate and securely store an encrypted file containing my wallet password. Sadly, the file became corrupted over time, denying me access to my stored Bitcoins amounting to 43.6 BTC.

Grand and Bruno took advantage of a recognized vulnerability in RoboForm’s random number generator. This issue connected passwords with the generation date and time on the user’s system.

In 2022, Michael contacted Grand with significant information. He revealed that he had moved Bitcoin into his digital wallet on April 13, 2013. Based on this discovery, researchers were able to narrow down the potential creation date of the password. They eventually determined that the password was generated on May 15, 2013.

Grand and Bruno were given a portion of the Bitcoin sales proceeds as compensation. Michael kept 30 Bitcoins for himself, which is worth more than $2 million based on current market value. He made it clear that he intended to keep his Bitcoins and wait until their price reaches $100,000 per token before selling.
