As an analyst with a background in cybersecurity and blockchain technology, I’ve seen my fair share of phishing attacks and scams in various ecosystems. However, the recent warnings from SlowMist founder Yu Xian, also known as “Cos,” about heightened phishing risks in the Telegram ecosystem are particularly concerning.
As a researcher, I’d like to share some important information from SlowMist founder Yu Xian, also known as “Cos” on X. He has recently issued a warning to Telegram users regarding increased risks of phishing attacks within the Telegram community.
On Monday, Xian posted on X that the ease of spreading phishing links and scam bots among Telegram users is a concern, attributing it to the platform’s open-source and cost-free structure. They expressed their viewpoint as, “the Telegram environment is overly permissive.”
As a researcher studying the TON ecosystem, I’ve noticed an uptick in phishing activities. The Telegram ecosystem’s excessive freedom allows for the proliferation of many fishing links (or bot forms) that are spread through message groups and other methods such as air drops to lure users into transferring their assets from their TON wallets, including NFTs like Anonymous Telegram Numbers which some people use to create Telegram accounts. Having these numbers compromised means the corresponding Telegram accounts are at risk.— Cos(余弦)😶🌫️ (@evilcos) June 24, 2024
As a crypto investor, I’ve come across an intriguing development in the TON ecosystem. Xian has brought up a novel method that some users are employing to attract others to their TON wallets. They’re using “Anonymous Telegram Numbers,” which resemble regular phone numbers. With these numbers, users can create hidden accounts on Telegram, adding an extra layer of privacy to their interactions.
The creator of the blockchain security platform warned that hackers could steal sensitive numbers, resulting in the compromise of entire accounts and linked wallets.
Xian suggests enabling an independent password, for example, two-step verification.
As an analyst, I’ve come across feedback from a user with the handle “amoy\_Lw” expressing dissatisfaction with the gaming ecosystem established on Telegram. They stated that this gaming ecosystem clashes significantly with Telegram’s philosophical approach to development.
Furthermore, he pointed out that Telegram’s founding philosophy prioritizes user privacy, contrasting with how games endeavor to draw in users “for the sake of engagement.”
As a crypto market analyst, I’ve noticed an uptick in scam activities that extend beyond the mini-games on Telegram. A recent report from crypto.news on June 21st revealed this trend, as scammers have been actively exploiting cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, Bybit, MEXC, and Gate.io. Their modus operandi involves distributing fake stablecoins on The Open Network (TON).
