Thai Authorities Bust Illegal Bitcoin Mining Operation Causing Power Outages

As a seasoned crypto investor with over a decade of experience in this dynamic industry, I find it disheartening to learn about illegal Bitcoin mining operations that not only disrupt local communities but also tarnish the reputation of legitimate miners like myself.

It has been uncovered by Thai officials that an illicit Bitcoin mining facility, suspected of causing recent power disruptions, is located in a town situated to the west of Bangkok.

Based on community accounts, the raid occurred on August 23 as a response to persistent power outages that had troubled the region for more than a month prior, following complaints from residents. Investigations into these mysterious power failures began in mid-July when locals brought the issue to light.

Investigations by the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and local law enforcement led them to a residence in Ratchaburi, where they uncovered the house was being utilized for Bitcoin mining. This operation, known for its high electrical consumption, was identified as the source of the issue.

Jamnong Chanwong, head of district security, noted an odd pattern: the house’s electricity consumption was significantly higher than usual, yet the payments towards electricity bills were surprisingly small. This anomaly could imply that the occupants might be illegally using power to operate their mining equipment. Interestingly, this residence had been leased by a company for approximately four months, coinciding with the onset of power outages in the area.

During the search, the authorities apparently confiscated the equipment; however, no one was taken into custody at that time. It’s suspected that the culprits escaped when they became aware that the probe was about to catch up with them. The inquiry is ongoing as investigators strive to pinpoint those responsible for the operation.
