As a seasoned crypto investor with over a decade of experience, I find myself both appalled and bewildered by the recent events involving Catherine Colivas and her associates. Having navigated through various market crashes, scams, and volatility, I never imagined that my digital assets would be used as ransom in such a bizarre and dangerous manner.
A 24-year-old TikTok user named Catherine Colivas seized a Saudi Royal in Victoria, Australia and demanded a ransom of $40,000 in Bitcoin, threatening to amputate his fingers if the demand wasn’t met. The surprising aspect is that even though she admitted her guilt, Colivas was handed a community service sentence rather than being imprisoned.
The incident took place in February 2023, following Colivas’ encounter with the Saudi Royal on a dating platform. As Colivas drugged the victim during their dinner and drinks, her associates stayed in wait.
As per a report from DailyMail, it appears that the 23-year-old individual, who is both involved in trading cryptocurrencies and selling Rolex timepieces, was enticed to Colivas’ residence.
As he guided her towards the exit, she’s sudden surrounded by Colivas and four companions, among them her boyfriend who deals in drugs. They bound him with wires and menaced him with a knife, demanding $20,000 in cash. Facing this situation, the victim proposed Bitcoin and arranged for a friend to execute a $40,000 transfer on his behalf.
Following their acquisition of Bitcoin, the offenders seized the victim’s digital keys, conducted an extensive search of his home, and made off with various items such as a Louis Vuitton handbag, designer garments, a PlayStation 5 console, and numerous iPhones. After regaining freedom, the victim sought medical attention for injuries to his head and wrists at a hospital. He also filed a police report regarding the crime.
In brief, Colivas and her companions were tried and convicted today at the County Court of Victoria. Although they each faced a possible 25-year prison term for kidnapping, Colivas was given a 30-month community service sentence instead.
In Judge Nola Karapanagiotidis’ statement, “extraordinary conditions” were mentioned, which encompassed Colivas’ troubled childhood, her fragile psychological condition, and the loss of her brother, Andrew, during the time leading up to her trial.
Kennedy, one of her friends who had previously served a 90-day sentence, was freed on a promise to behave well following her guilty plea for theft and burglary offenses. Both ladies expressed their regret, with Kennedy additionally offering an apology to the judicial system.
