🌪️ Get ready for a plot twist, folks! Alexey Pertsev, the brain behind the crypto privacy tool Tornado Cash, is set to be released from prison on Friday. He’s gearing up to appeal his 2024 money laundering conviction.
In May 2024, this poor chap was sentenced to 64 months in a Dutch prison after being found guilty of assisting criminals in laundering illicit funds. Prosecutors argued that he should have been aware that Tornado Cash was being used to launder over $1 billion from various cyberattacks. 🙄
Dear Friends, on Friday 7 February at 10 am I will be free! It is not real freedom, but it is better than prison. Today, a Dutch court suspended my pretrial detention under the condition of electronic monitoring. This will give me a chance to work on my appeal and fight for…

The platform, which allows users to mix cryptocurrency transactions to keep them private, was sanctioned by the U.S. government for its illegal links to North Korean hackers. But worry not, Pertsev’s lawyer, Judith de Boer, said, “With his release, we can now fully focus on his defense and prepare for the appeal in better conditions.”
After spending nearly two years behind bars since his 2022 arrest, Pertsev has now been granted release under electronic monitoring. His lawyer, Judith de Boer, welcomed the decision, saying it would give them a fairer chance to prepare his defense.
His appeal comes after a key U.S. court ruling in November 2024 that declared sanctions against Tornado Cash unlawful. Numerous privacy advocates and crypto experts, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, have criticized the prosecution of Pertsev, contending that software developers shouldn’t be penalized for how their code is used by others.
This also comes as Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm has also been hit with U.S. legal woes on similar charges. A New York court recently turned down his request to have the case dismissed. His legal fight has drawn support from groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the venture capital firm Paradigm, who view it as an important case for the future of crypto development.
Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang warned that prosecuting developers for the misuse of their software could discourage innovation in the crypto industry.
Although Pertsev is being released, his legal battle isn’t over yet. The outcome of his appeal could have major consequences for privacy-focused cryptocurrency tools and the future of digital finance.
