As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in technology and its impact on global development, I find this latest initiative by the United Nations to be a commendable step towards embracing innovation for sustainable change. Having witnessed firsthand the transformative power of blockchain technology in various sectors, it is heartening to see the UN taking concrete steps to equip its personnel with the necessary skills to leverage this technology for good.
Approximately 24,000 United Nations employees will soon have the opportunity to learn about blockchain technology, as the UN continues to grow its academy, a program jointly established with the Algorand Foundation.
According to a press statement issued on November 19th, the United Nations Development Programme plans to broaden its blockchain education program, aiming to instruct approximately 24,000 staff members across the globe.
In partnership with the Algorand Foundation, this project is designed to teach UN staff members about blockchain technologies. As stated by Doro Unger-Lee, head of education and financial inclusion at the Algorand Foundation, this knowledge will empower them to recognize how these technologies can be utilized in creating a more sustainable and equitable future.
Blockchain technology is crucial because it increases transparency and efficiency, thereby amplifying the effectiveness of sustainable development initiatives.

United Nations experiments with blockchain
In late 2023, The Blockchain Education Center was established, offering tailored education on the intricacies of blockchain technology and its prospective uses within development initiatives. During its trial period, this center certified over 30 United Nations employees and expanded its coursework by approximately 18 hours, as reported in a press statement.
The enhanced educational offering now caters to a more comprehensive course selection, accessible to everyone working at the United Nations Development Programme, UN Volunteers, and the United Nations Capital Development Fund.
As an analyst, I’ve been part of a team at the United Nations Development Programme that has delved into blockchain technology since 2015. Our explorations have spanned diverse sectors, from monitoring cocoa supply chains to fostering digital impact investments. This broadening scope mirrors the UN’s wider initiatives. Notably, by December 2023, we are set to launch the Guardian and Managed Guardian Service platform in collaboration with the HBAR Foundation for carbon markets. This innovative platform, powered by Hedera’s blockchain, streamlines digital measurement, reporting, and verification processes within carbon markets.
