Collectively, the United States, Japan, and South Korea have issued a notice emphasizing the increasing danger that North Korean cyber entities represent towards the worldwide cryptocurrency market.
As a researcher, I’m sharing an important warning that has been issued by the governments of the United States, Japan, and South Korea regarding potential cyberattacks originating from North Korea. These attacks could potentially disrupt the global financial system, particularly within the blockchain industry. On January 14th, the Japanese government specifically highlighted groups such as the Lazarus Group, which are reportedly focusing their efforts on infiltrating cryptocurrency exchanges and targeting investors to steal digital assets.
In a recent statement, governments warned about North Korean cybercriminals employing social engineering methods, including malware such as TraderTraitor and AppleJeus. They advised web3 companies to revisit previous warnings to prevent unintentional hiring of IT workers from the DPRK. Furthermore, they suggested strengthening collaboration between private and public sectors through initiatives like the Crypto-ISAC in the U.S., similar efforts in Japan, and related endeavors in South Korea.
2024 saw numerous instances of cybercrimes associated with North Korea, such as the theft of $308 million from Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin and an attack that led to a loss of $50 million on the South Korean trading platform Upbit.
During the Cyberwarcon conference held in November 2024, researchers uncovered that some North Korean hackers had been masquerading as remote employees for big corporations, such as IT personnel and recruiters. The investigation also unearthed two hacker gangs, Sapphire Sleet and Ruby Sleet, operating under North Korea’s authority, who managed to pilfer $10 million in a span of six months by impersonating recruiters or venture capitalists.
