As a seasoned researcher with a background in international relations and human rights, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance employee who has served as a U.S. law enforcement officer. The fact that this highly skilled professional is being held on allegations that have been dropped or are questionable raises serious concerns about due process and fair treatment.
It appears that the United States is intensifying its diplomatic work in an attempt to facilitate the freedom of Tigran Gambaryan, who has been held in custody in Nigeria since February 2024 and happens to be a worker for Binance.
According to reports from The New York Times, officials within the U.S. government have been privately discussing with the President, Finance Minister, Attorney General, and Trade Minister of Nigeria about the possibility of releasing Gambaryan.
Previously a U.S. law enforcement official, now leading Binance’s (BNB) anti-money laundering efforts, Gambaryan journeyed to Nigeria for discussions regarding their business activities within the country. Unfortunately, during this visit, he was apprehended due to allegations of tax evasion and money laundering.
While the tax charges were later dropped, he remains detained on money laundering accusations.
The arrest of Gambaryan has put a stretch on U.S.-Nigeria diplomatic ties. Reportedly, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has directly brought up this matter with his Nigerian counterpart, as stated by the New York Times.
Gambaryan’s health issues
As a concerned crypto investor and global citizen, I’ve learned that even diplomats in the United States, including our ambassador in Nigeria, are advocating for the release of an individual named Gambaryan on humanitarian grounds. Reports suggest that his health has significantly declined, which makes it imperative that he is set free.
As a crypto investor speaking personally, I’ve been grappling with health problems due to malaria and a herniated disk, which have only worsened because of what seems like inadequate medical attention. This lack of proper care has led to additional health complications.
Towards the end of August, Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, spoke out publicly asking for the release of Gambaryan. He criticized the Nigerian government for keeping him imprisoned on unsubstantiated accusations. Teng highlighted that this detention is causing significant physical and emotional distress to the executive, and urged Nigeria to peacefully resolve the issue as Binance has done in other nations in similar situations.
According to media reports shared with crypto.news, Gambaryan had requested a wheelchair during recent court hearings in early September, but was instead provided with crutches instead.
It’s crucial that this unfair and cruel handling of Tigran cease. He deserves the right to return home for necessary medical care and to reunite with his loved ones.

Despite these government efforts, Gambaryan remains in Kuje Detention Facility near Abuja, with the U.S. continuing to advocate for his release.
