It seems the sunshine state has some very dark clouds hanging over it as Florida teenagers face charges of kidnapping and stealing a rather eye-watering $4 million in cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens. Quite the audacious crime for such tender ages, wouldn’t you agree?
Our Not-So-Ordinary Teenagers to Face Justice Like Grown-Ups
Three teenagers, residents of the ever-charming Pasco County, Florida, have been accused of the most daring of crimes, involving kidnapping and the theft of a substantial fortune in digital currency and tokens. The suspects, two of whom—Belal Ashraf and Austin Fletcher—are but 16 years old, have already made a name for themselves in the most infamous way. A third, unidentified accomplice, seems to have evaded both the law and, one imagines, the common sense of their peers.
As court records reveal, these youths have found themselves charged with robbery, kidnapping, and extortion. The severity of these heinous offenses has led to them being certified for trial as adults—a rather daunting prospect for anyone, let alone those yet to legally obtain a driver’s license. During Fletcher’s probable cause hearing on May 9, a prosecutor was so kind as to inform us that the third individual is no longer in the United States. Well, that’s one way to avoid the consequences of your actions, isn’t it?
According to a local report, the tale begins in November, when these dashing young fellows accosted their victim after he had returned from a cryptocurrency event. Imagine, if you will, this poor soul, stepping back into his humble abode after a day of digital excitement, only to find himself thrust into the back of a vehicle by three spirited teens. The document detailing their actions is rather chilling, as they allegedly threatened the victim with the tragic fate of his father should he fail to comply.
“[The victim] was told that if he complied, he would live to see another day. Should he choose not to comply, however, his father would meet an untimely and most unfortunate end,” court documents state. I dare say the victim probably never expected such a dramatic turn of events!
In the midst of these antics, local police have a hunch that another party was involved in orchestrating this rather disconcerting escapade via communication with the teenagers. But the fun doesn’t end there!
In a delightful twist of fate—or perhaps misfortune for the criminals—the teens drove their hapless victim across the state line to White Hills, Arizona, where they unceremoniously abandoned him. The victim, who, I must add, must have had quite the resolve, trekked five miles on foot to the nearest gas station, where he managed to call for assistance. Quite the feat, don’t you think? A true tale of resilience, even in the face of youthful mischief.
During a hearing for Fletcher, his public defender, possibly with the hope of turning the tide, suggested that house arrest would be a fitting punishment. But alas, Judge Daniel Westmeyer, no stranger to the consequences of crime, set bail at a hefty $4 million. As for Ashraf, his attorney also requested house arrest, but Judge Noreen Demonte decided that electronic monitoring was a more suitable option for the young man, presumably to prevent any more adventurous outings into the Arizona desert.
