Blockchain firm Match Sytems saves $68m from ‘dust attack’

As a researcher with extensive experience in blockchain forensics and cybersecurity, I’m thrilled to see Match Systems successfully recover $68 million of stolen crypto for a victim who fell prey to an address poisoning attack. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of prompt reporting and working with experts like Match Systems when faced with such incidents.

Match Systems, a leading blockchain forensics company, declared on Saturday the successful retrieval of $68 million worth of cryptocurrencies that were previously stolen.

On May 3rd, an incident referred to as a “dust theft” transpired. Fortunately, the stolen funds were restored to their rightful owner, with the assistance of Match Systems based in the UAE and cryptocurrency exchange Cryptex.net.

The victim received the complete $68 million compensation from the May 3, 2024 “dust” incident, aided by MatchSystems cybersecurity agency and cryptex_net cryptocurrency exchange’s cooperation.

Crypto whale lost $69.3 million in WBTC

As a researcher studying cryptocurrency news, I came across an intriguing incident reported by crypto.news this month. A significant crypto investor, referred to as a “whale,” fell prey to a devious scheme known as “address poisoning.” Consequentially, an audacious thief made off with 1,155.28 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) from the victim’s digital wallet.

That’s equivalent to a staggering $69.3 million at the time.

The early interactions between the victim and the attacker as depicted in the blockchain records remained unanswered despite the victim’s efforts to initiate communication and offering a tempting 10% reward.

Unexpectedly on May 9, the attacker took the initiative and contacted the victim through Telegram, expressing a willingness to engage.

Andrei Kutin, the CEO of Match Systems, shares that the victim turned to his company for help in tracking down and recovering lost funds.

The thieves’ trail of clues from the heist pointed to intricate financial dealings. The purloined money allegedly hopped between numerous accounts, concealing their source.

Match Systems’ detectives outsmarted their opponents with great diligence, successfully tracking down the unlawful transfer of assets and eventually apprehending the culprits.

Puzzle remains

The corporation failed to disclose comprehensive information regarding the retrieval of the stolen cryptocurrency. Additionally, the crypto world is buzzing with curiosity after the attacker suddenly went from disregarding the victim’s efforts to engage in dialogue and instead reached out actively.

After a relentless seven-day chase, Match Systems managed to recover the misappropriated funds and restored them to their legitimate possessor.

Although the attack resulted in a minor loss as the attacker converted WBTC to Ether, the victim managed to recover their full amount of assets again.

Victims urged to report theft promptly

Address poisoning, a deceptive ploy that mimics legitimate wallet addresses, poses a significant threat to users’ financial security.

If you identify and report address poisoning attacks to specialists at Match Systems as soon as possible, you may increase your chances of retrieving any misappropriated funds.

Based on the company’s calculations, reporting an asset incident within the initial hour increases the likelihood of recovery by up to 70%. Conversely, if the case is reported within the first four hours, the chances drop to around 60%, and if it takes place within the first 24 hours, the probability decreases further to approximately 50%.

Chances of a successful outcome are even slimmer, 20%, if you wait a month to report the incident.
